Unfortunately, we do things everyday that pollute the river, though we may not even realize we’re doing it. Here are some things you can do to make sure you aren’t contributing to the pollution:
| | Check your vehicles for leaks. Fuel and oil that drips onto the ground could eventually wash into the river.
| Dispose of all waste chemicals properly. Most county landfills have hazardous waste turn-in days, where you can turn in your old paint and household chemicals
| Don’t litter! And if you see litter on the ground, try to pick it up and throw it away |
| If you’re taking your pet for a walk, clean up after it! Pet waste adds nitrogen as well as potential harmful bacteria to the river.
| Instead of washing your car outside, where soapy suds and oily water can make its way to the river, take it to a car wash instead. Most car washes recycle their water, and going through the car wash is fun too!

| Get involved with the Adopt-A-Highway program. Do your part in keeping our roadsides clean!

| Get involved with a conservancy group, like Friends of the Rappahannock! You’ll learn a lot, make new friends, and feel great knowing that you are helping to keep the river clean for future generations. |
| Pass it on! Talk to your family and friends about how you can help keep pollutants from entering the river.
