Formed in 1985 by a group of concerned citizens, Friends of the Rappahannock has grown to be a nationally recognized grassroots conservation organization. Over the last 26 years, FOR has grown from a volunteer-based organization operating out of a single office to a 13-person staff operating on a 12-acre nature preserve.

Friends of the Rappahannock serves as the voice and active force for a healthy and scenic Rappahannock River. Our staff of environmental professionals work to advocate for cleaner waters, lead restoration projects, and educate thousands of youth each year through the use of sound science and constructive engagement with all watershed stakeholders.

Inspired by our 25th anniversary as a successful grassroots conservation group, Friends of the Rappahannock's Giving Circles was born from our "25 for the 25th" campaign. The 25 for 25 challenge sought to find 25 people to take a leadership role in helping to expand FOR's reach and impact.

Giving circles encourage our members and partners to take a leadership role in supporting river protection programs.  Leaders demonstrate the ability to envision tomorrow, to motivate others and commit to live purposefully.  Leadership giving is not different.  You embrace the challenge of keeping the Rappahannock healthy and scenic, act as a catalyst for others and demonstrate your commitment to the river.

When you join a giving circle you commit to a gift of one of the following amounts each year, for three years:

  • $500
  • $1,000
  • $5,000

"Giving circles allow us to plan into the future.  When we have a better idea that a portion of our income is committed for 3 years, it allows us to move forward with expansions or new programs that couldn't necessarily do otherwise." John Tippett, FOR Executive Director

Through your leadership gift to FOR, you have the opportunity to make an investment in the river and a meaningful difference in our community.

What if we all rallied for the river?

If you are passionate about the health and scenic beauty of the Rappahannock River,
commit to GIVE on May 6 and help FOR win a portion of $100,000 in prizes!

The Community Give is an online opportunity to rally together and give back to the community that gives so much to each of us. On May 6, 2014, FOR will have 24 hours to collect as many online donations as possible. The more we raise, the more prizes we can earn. In 2012, with the help of our community, we were able to win a brand new Toyota Highlander in a nationwide contest.

Part of Virginia Partners Bank's mission is to put time and treasure back into the community.  As Fredericksburg's only locally owned and managed bank, they have committed to helping keep the river healthy and scenic.  Part of that commitment is the creation of Friends of the Rappahannock affinity accounts.  Any community member who opens a checking, checking with interest, or savings account can opt into an affinity account.   The bank will make a donation to FOR based on the average balance in all the affinity accounts. No money will come from your account. It's great for the community and great for the river!

If you are interested, please contact Judy Nave at 540-899-0005 or jnave@vapartnersbank.com.

Planned giving is a way you can leave assets to a non-profit.

"The Rappahannock River will be here long after we are gone. We would like to leave a gift of a healthy river to our descendants and the generations to come."

-Anne and Carl Little, legacy donors

"The River is going to be around a whole lot longer than I am, and I'd like to protect it."

-Jim Steele, Rappahannock Legacy Society Member

"Our time is very short on this planet, and we don't often get the opportunity to make a lasting impact. If we can make the world a better place in perpetuity, we should do it. Friends of the Rappahannock allows us to leave a legacy in preserving the river and educating children to value it and do the same for generations to come."

-Bill and Denise Micks, Rappahannock Legacy Society Member
